The Bill Hart Project - Think About It

Between smooth jazz and fusion you'll find The Bill Hart Project, dynamite melodic guitar-based jazz. This CD is gem for guitar fans. Bill cuts loose with ex-Miles Davis sideman and guitarist extraordinaire Mike Stern! Mike sits in on "What Are You Doing," "This Is Why," "Yes You Can," and "Got Mike?" Defintely check out the way it all comes together on track #5-"Yes You Can." The author of "Solo Jazz Guitar" in the Hal Leonard series, Bill Hart is also the head of the Guitar Department at the Atlanta Institute for Music. Bill's rich, warm tone meshes perfectly with his killer chops to create a playing style that celebrates the guitar without the histrionics that can bog down so many guitar-based CDs.

Jeff Urso - Straight Ahead

Jeff Urso - Straight Ahead

Jeff Urso's all instrumental rock guitar debut is entitled Straight Ahead, featuring ten tracks that run the gamut from rock to hard rock to techno to Southern rock - and points in between. Each song has a history and a purpose, for example, "I Alive" is a keyboard track that was written for a friend that lost his life in a motorcycle accident; "Low Down" features a 7-string guitar with a Kid Rock feel blended with Queen-like harmonies. "Down And Dirty" is a flanger-heavy number reminiscent of Rob Zombie, with a "balls out" solo, while "Warm Day" is intended to be consumed while listening is a fast sports car on a midsummer afternoon with the top down and the windows open. "Cyber Me" explores a techno/rock mix with nods to U2's "Elevation", while "Thinking Of You", dedicated to Urso's lady, has a Matchbox 20 feel to it. Straight Ahead has a definite appeal for fans of dynamic compositions, cool solos and walls of guitar. Instrumental Guitar (Electric/Rock/Hard Rock)Info: guitar9.com

Alien Cowboys - Analogtherapy

Alien Cowboys - Analogtherapy

"Analogtherapy" is the Alien Cowboys second CD recording (following their self-titled debut), a nine song CD featuring all original material, highlighted again by the big singable melodies and driving rhythms which became their trademark on their first release. Songs such as "Sagarmatha" and "Alien Cowboys Theme" are loaded with guitarist Ralph Perucci's lead jams as well as second guitarist Bruce Stevenson's propulsive rhythm chunk. Stevenson's production is again top-notch -- "Analogtherapy" is an album permeated by the group's strength, fervor and passion for instrumental rock. Rounding out the band members are Ian Thompson on drums and Greg Jones on bass.

L.A. Sux - Time Never Stops

L.A. Sux - Time Never Stops

The German trio of guitarist Joachim Schutte, bassist Karsten Fernau and drummer Dirk Erchinger are known as L.A. Sux, and their debut CD is entitled Time Never Stops. Their ambivalent relationship to Los Angeles and it's contrasts are reflected in the unmistakable compositional and guitar style of Schutte, and also by the fat bass lines of Fernau. Schutte and Fernau are graduates of Hollywood's Musicians Institute, and their music reflects varied influences, but maintains an overdriven rock fusion presence throughout the thirteen tracks. Check out highlights such as "Bass Groove" and "Rated X Music" and you'll hear fiery electric guitar work supported by superior rhythm tracks. Time Never Stops is a CD permeated by Schutte, Fernau and Erchinger's strength and fervor. Instrumental Guitar (Electric (Heavy)/Hard Rock/Fusion) Info: guitar9.com

Mike Martin - 2 Of 5

Mike Martin - 2 Of 5

Mike Martin is a veteran of the Atlanta blues and jazz music scene who has played on and off with Sean Delson of Fozzy for years. Mike is the Mechanic Of Shred and everyone in Fozzy refers to him as Sir! If Steve Vai and Joe Satriani had a crack baby, he might play like Mike. Mike's first appearance for Fozzy was in the multi-camera, high-tech shoot for the "Enemy" video on top of a San Diego skyscraper and his next appearance was in the downstairs of a restaurant at a Fozzy gig in Camp Hill, PA (that started only after a high school reunion that took place before the show was done)... and he rocked just as hard at both. His 2006 solo CD, 2 Of 5, is all about art and emotional expressionism, and features John McKnight on drums, Eric Frampton on keyboards, and Jon Schwenke and Steve Mays on bass. John Raptis - The Circle

John Raptis - The Circle

Bassist Michael Evdemon writes about Greek guitarist John Raptis 2005 CD, "The Circle is the perfect title to describe the "spirit" of the team (Raptis, drummer Kalistridis and myself). All three of these guys share the same way of thinking regarding "making music". To improvise, to communicate, to listen, to support, to have fun - these are only a few of the phrases that describe their way of making music. Putting these words together we have a "circle" of harmonies, grooves and solos that make these guys feel free and content." The listener will hear Raptis work his improvisational magic on guitar and guitar synth over the seven instrumental fusion tracks, an exciting follow up to his 2004 album, "Trip". Martin Motnik - Bass Invader

Bass Invader is the title of German bassist Martin Motnik's solo CD with bass, of course, as the main instrument. Motnik began recording the album with the idea in mind to give the listener an overview of all of his many different playing techniques and musical styles. The songs will capture the interest of non-musicians as well, as Motnik uses a creative compositional style to highlight the bass and keep the melody relevant. Bass Invader features none other than Gregg Bissonette on drums, and, as a special guest, you will hear Swedish master guitarist Mattias IA Eklundh on two songs! The basses he uses are two Roya 5 string (fretted and fretless) by Jens Ritter, an acoustic Ibanez AEB 10 and an Esh 6 string. Bass Professor wrote in April 2005 about the CD, "Bass Invader presents a sweeping blow on all possibilities of playing bass - Motnik masters them all, no matter if slow, fast, tapped or beating with the thumb." John Inman - Modeous Eclectic

John Inman - Modeous Eclectic

On "Modeous Eclectic", Dallas-based guitarist John Inman blends fusion and jazz influences with progressive rock textures to create the often moody and intricate soundscapes that embody this release. Inman incorporates the influences of a varied list of players including Randy Rhoads, Al DiMeola, Neil Schon, Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. Technical prowess combined with pure emotion and melodic sensibility make Inman's compositions interesting to the average "guitar-head", but can easily be enjoyed by any and all. Highlights include "Vegas Sunset", "Altered States" and "Trip The Light". Instrumental Guitar (Electric/Fusion/Progressive)

Steve Topping - Time and Distance

Steve Topping - Time and Distance

Andy Holdsworth writes in the liner notes about guitarist Steve Topping's solo instrumental fusion release "Time And Distance", "Musical truth is abstract - in its genesis, and in its experience. The engines of its meaning are not represented on its surface - the source of its renewal will not be found there - in style. Music that is arrived at by the appropriation of style cannot be real. The vast cultural legact exerts such centrifugal force that it tempts us to go shopping in a candy store of styles - but our engagement in pre-existing contexts is only legitimised when distilled - through the small voice inside. Music that is arrived at by the distillation of style cannot but be real. No matter how simple the technical means or manner of expression, it is only through this process that we can ever hope to convey our interior experience, with which, at its still centre, music is joined." Topping's CD also features Allan Holdsworth's original I.O.U. rhythm section of Gary Husband (drums) and Paul Carmichael (bass).

Jartse Tuominen and the Takala Project - Progressive

Jartse Tuominen and the Takala Project - Progressive

Progressive features the improvisational progressive fusion music of Finnish guitarist Jartse Tuominen supported by drummer Matti Takala and bassist Kilroy Koskimies. The Takala Project was established originally in 1988, and Progressive was recorded in 1991, the U.S. edition of which was recently released. How to describe their music? Let's assume that Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Al Di Meola, Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Billy Sheehan and Jaco Pastorius were in the audience at a Takala Project gig. They would certainly recogize aspects of their own music, but they wouldn't be able to keep their butts on the bench. The partying aspect of the group's gigs is such an overwhelming experience. Tuominen's group was a hyperactive trio in their own distinctive style. Instrumental Guitar (Electric (Heavy)/Fusion/Progressive)

Joe Romagnola at the Grooveyard adds, "Nicola Costa is an outstanding, world-class player who stands tall with the best of them. The bluesy-fusion direction/vibe grooves hard and his liquid organic tones are authentic and pure. The heavy Michael Landau inspiration on "Little Boy Blues" shines deep. French guitarist Fred Hamm's 2000 solo instrumental CD, "Aquarius Dreams", blends hard rock and progressive rock influences, as well as shades of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Ron Thal. Featured are bassist Pascal Mulot (voted best fusion bass player in 2003). and drummers Doudou Weiss and Gilles Choir (official demonstrator for Zildjian and Pearl). With a fusion of rock, jazz, metal and progressive, all tracks are heavily guitar dominated, recalling the great Satriani and Stuart Hamm collaborations. The song "Aquarius" is moreover dedicated to Satriani. "Aquarius Dreams" has remarkable energy - certain fragments, such as "Song For The Natives", blend rock 'n' roll with samples added to embellish the melody.

Larry Mitchell - Sonic Temple

Brooklyn born, long-time trusty Ibanez endorsee, musician/guitarist/producer Larry Mitchell played everything with everyone. his versatility allowed him not only to cover every kind of genres they wanted him to play, but also to express himself production-wise during the last 6 years, with great results. He started playing guitar because of kind of a "diplomatic accident", as he tells: "I started playing guitar at age 9, after my mom threw my drumset out of the window..." he then realized he was made for it and he soon won many contests, like New York City's "Limelight Guitar Solo Contest" in 1987. Self taught, his initial influences and roots stem from R&B and funk, with strong emphasis on rhythmic playing. Larry's curiosity in rock guitar, leads and sound effects grew from his eye opening exposure to the sounds of Prince and Van Halen. His style became more dynamic and aggressive, but never forgetting his initial inspirations. In 1988 he's got his endorsement with Ibanez, then he's got his first World Tour with Miguel Bose. in 1990 his first album "Larry Mitchell" (Grudge Records) came out and then he's started working on Rik Ocasek's "Fire Ball Music" album, and also performed with him at the Light House Benefit and at the China Club Unannounced Show. in 1991 Larry toured with rock singer Billy Squier, and a year later he toured with Tracy Chapman.Larry also worked with various artists, like TM.Stevens (Black Rock Christmas TV Show in Germany and Japan), and Sandra Bernard. in 1993 his REH' instructional video "The Linking System" (Warner Bros) came out.In 1993 Larry also released his second album "Mind, Body, Soul" (Guitar Player Records and Ridgetop Music), then between 1994-1995 he performed on the Jon Stewart Show with Coolio, Montel Jordan, Pete Rock and C.L.Smooth. in 1995 album "Escape: Acoustic Passages Vol.1" came out for his own label, String Time Music (America) & Bandai (Japan). two years later Larry released another album, "Temptation" (String Time Music) and in 1999 his album "Insatiable" (String Time Music) won San Diego Music Awards "Best Pop-Jazz". In 1995 Larry produced the "Rust Charles Band" first outside production, and he's been producing other artists since 1999. Various Singer songwriters, Rock, Acoustic folk, Pop and R&B won Awards for best production. Larry is currently in production of New Instrumental Rock/Fusion CD "Sonic Temple".

Ronny Heimdal - Timequake

Icy Scandinavian arrangements (cf. Miles Davis' Aura) do battle for space with Zappa-like and, of course, Rypdal-sounding solos on this lengthy, near 70 minute CD. Synth textures repeatedly hint of Garbarek's recent Rites while funkier textures move towards the grungier end of the spectrum - not easy to incorporate into the same track, but tight playing and well structured compositions make it work here. Even if you are into this more abstracted jazz rock, on some tracks sparse pounding backbeats can be monotonous, while on others the drumming is imaginative and complex. Switches in tempo and canny use of exciting keyboard snippets and acoustic interventions keep the ear interested, making even the shred-like material more than just enjoyable. Featuring: Ronny Heimdal (Guitar); Zsolt Meszaros (Drums); Fritz A. Aga(Bass) .

GuitarStew - Jim & Jam

GuitarStew - Jim & Jam

Jim & Jam is the 2004 instrumental collaborative work of Danish rock/pop, metal/blues/fusion guitarists Jacob Kjaer, Tonni Rahm and Mac Gaunaa. The GuitarStew project originated out of a series of jam sessions, where the basic idea was that all of the soloing was to be improvised. An additional rule was that if two of the three players liked a specific take, it should be kept - regardless of who liked it or not. All the backing tracks/songs were written by Jacob Kjaer and Tonni Rahm, but it was forbidden for the composer to solo over the track prior to the jam session; this way the spontanity and energy was captured for everyone, since the track would be totally 'fresh' for all. The results of these jam sessions were so impressive that the three decided it should be available to all the instrumental guitar lovers out there. The result of this is the ten songs on the GuitarStew CD Jim & Jam. All three musicians feel that the result really reflect the spontanity, joy, energy and emotion linked with improvised guitar at its best! Instrumental Guitar (Electric (Heavy)/Hard Rock/Fusion)

Clark obviously wasn't listening when people said great guitar players can't write great songs because you get fiery arena vocal performances ("Mary Love", "Runaround"), combined with instrumental tracks like "Avalanche", "Still Waters" and "The Fugitive", that display incredible feel as well as scorching technique. Perspective takes guitar playing to new heights with dizzying results.
